Danbury Library is excited to welcome Bert terHart to share his exciting incredible sailing adventure with us. On April 1st, 2022, Bert terHart set out from the Salish Sea on Canada's Pacific Coast headed for the Atlantic Ocean an entire continent away. Traveling solo by canoe and using only maps and a compass, Bert was attempting the next to impossible: a solo journey by canoe paddling more than 6600 kms and over 1200kms of portaging. He traveled around five capes – one in Chile, one in South Africa, two in Australia and one in New Zealand. His trip was difficult at times and terHart only had about four hours of sleep each day. The weather didn’t make things easy either, with waves sometimes reaching 4.5 meters high. However, he said the sights on the trip, like the stars, birds, sunsets and sunrises had been amazing. He became the first North American to sail solo.

Bert terHart is a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographic Society and the Explorer in Residence for the BC Historical Society . He is an internationally acclaimed sailor and paddler. Bert is only the 9th person in the world to complete a solo, non-stop circumnavigation using only traditional navigational.

Free, Registration is required.
