Mythical creatures, legendary beasts, terrifying monsters… they are supernatural, mystical, often god-like or demon-like beings, and they have fascinated us since ancient times. Even today, they continue to thrill, terrify, entertain, and inspire us. They have filled folklore, stories, songs, and works of art. They may even be able to protect us from viruses. Learn about some of the fascinating mythical creatures, demons, and other beings which abound in Asian art of all cultures.

Located in the heart of San Francisco, the Asian Art Museum is home to one of the world’s finest collections of Asian art, boasting more than 18,000 awe-inspiring artworks ranging from ancient jades and ceramics to contemporary video installations. Dynamic special exhibitions, cultural celebrations and public programs for all ages provide rich art experiences that unlock the past and spark questions about the future.
